Abstract ◊ The article considers the theme of the face and the mask in the book of journey notes entitled “Russia in 1839” by A. de Custine. The author highlights its role in the construction of the image of Russia and shows the significance of the tradition of the 17th–18th centuries French moralistic literature for the creation of Custine’s myth about Russia — “the empire of façades”.
