The 9th Annual NY-St. Petersburg Institute of Linguistics, Cognition and Culture, (NYI 9) July 18 — August 05, 2011
The Opening ceremonies of the 9th Annual NY-St. Petersburg Institute of Linguistics, Cognition and Culture will take place on July 18, 2011 at the School of Arts and Philology, St. Petersburg State University.
The New York-St. Petersburg Institute of Linguistics, Cognition and Culture is a unique academic experience, the only one of its kind in Russia (or elsewhere) and was created as a joint project between the State University of New York at Stony Brook and St. Petersburg State University.
The NYI summer program is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students and researchers with relevant academic background interested in improving their knowledge in formal linguistics, cultural studies and cognitive psychology. The working language of the program is English.
In the eight years of its history, more than 800 students have participated from throughout the Russian Federation as well as from Austria, Belarus, Bosnia, Croatia, France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Palestine, Serbia, Spain, the UK, Ukraine, and the USA.
The NYI program is unique in its focus on issues that do not easily fall within traditional discipline boundaries and as such are not always represented in the academic programs of many universities.
The informal western atmosphere promotes discussion and analysis of interdisciplinary themes and research in such fields as psychology, cognitive science, formal linguistics, philosophy, cultural studies and media/film studies.
NYI students have the opportunity of creating their own unique study program at NYI, choosing those 4 seminars, from among the 16 available, that best fit their individual interests. (For details, see http://www.nyi.spb.ru.)
In 2011, for the ninth time, NYI has attracted a stellar group of faculty, representing leading American and European Universities: Stony Brook, Harvard, Stanford, Bristol University, CUNY, the University of Pecs, Moscow State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Rochester, Vanderbilt University, and others.
The NYI founders and Directors. Prof. Anna Alexandrovna Maslennikova (St. Petersburg State University) and Prof. John F. Bailyn (State University of New York at Stony Brook) are confident that the 2011 NYI will attract the highest level of students from across the region, and we urge you to spread the word to interested faculty and students.
