Fidenko Ju. L. Song Collections of the Catholic Parishes of the Asian Part of Russia at the Turn of the 20th–21st Centuries

(The Far East State Academy of Arts, Vladivostok;
Glinka Novosibirsk State Conservatory [Academy])

Abstract ♦ The article presents an analysis of the musical and liturgical songbooks of the major Catholic parishes of the Asian parts of Russia — Siberia and the Far East. A particular interest to the song collections of certain regions is caused by the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), which allowed to use national language and various musical materials during the worship service. Attention to this issue has been raised by the absence of research of contemporary musical life of Russian Catholic parishes, which were established in the beginning of the 1990s.

First editions of the 1990s differ in their structural latitude and matter’s diversity. As a peculiar style indicator of divine services in different parishes, song collections of this period demonstrate a local manifestation of a general Catholic tradition, connected primarily with the influence of other nationalities (Polish, German, American, Korean). The source material is borrowed from foreign liturgical originals and is translated by local authors quite freely. The authors of the greater part of compositions are not named, the samples of the Gregorian chant in five-line notation with transcribed text in Russian are arbitrarily included.

The need to unify the Russian-language liturgical repertoire became urgent in the 2000s. The work of the musical workshop of the Conference for the Catholic Bishops of Russia resulted in the official collection of liturgical chants entitled "Praise to the Lord". The edition fully meets the requirements of Vatican, which proclaims the Gregorian tradition as a standard. This songbook is approved as a norm and is required for the use in Russian-language Catholic parishes.

The article concludes that the dynamics of the formation of song collections of the Catholic parishes of the Asian part of Russia reflects evolutionary processes within the Russian Catholic tradition. Liturgical publications represent only a codification of certain songs, which are mixed up in the real practice of worship and create a variety of combinations.

Keywords: the Mass, the Second Vatican Council, Catholicism, liturgical collections, liturgical publications, psalm, Siberia, the Far East.
