Abstract ♦ The strategies of subject status and independent living for the disabled have acquired a special meaning at the moment, due to worsening standards of living for this category of people. The problem lies in the changing conditions on the labor market, in culture, values and social norms. The disabled lack relevant training and an ability to compete; they have no access to information and cannot use information technologies to their advantage. Taken together, it amounts to their total non-participation in information society.
We define information society as a new social system on the rise in the societies that had reached a stage of technical development when information, its quality and transfer speed are crucial factors of competitiveness in both industry and services. This requires permanent training, updating knowledge and upgrading professional qualification.
Disabled people who find it hard to function in information society may be helped by an education model where learning centers on all levels will prepare people for self-education and lifelong learning. Some forms of education should offer a variety of study and learning types, well adapted to learner groups at various ages. Supporting learning for the disabled should become one of the most important segments of the education system in Poland. This can be implemented with the help of ICT solutions utilizing e-learning as a new system of study and work. A further stage in support of the disabled will open when they get an opportunity to work remotely. In Europe this practice has come to be known as ‘teleworking’.
