Radishcheva V. O. On the Methodology of Researching German Linguoconcepts: The Case of Linguoconcept “Lüge” (Lie))

(Southern Federal University)

Abstract ♦ The article looks at the prospects of studying linguoconcepts as a linguocultural category, made even more urgent by the interest in identifying linguocultural peculiarities of various cultures. The aim of this article is to provide a definition of linguoconcept and to consider some methods of its research. Linguoconcepts as units of mentality can be of immense use for discovering linguospecific features of ethnic mentality. The two main approaches to researching the concept are the linguocognitive and linguocultural, shaped through three methods of analysis — the etymological, componential and conceptual ones.

The article provides a detailed analysis of the German linguoconcept “Lüge” (lie). Etymological analysis shows the semantic meaning of the lie: the concealment of intentions, the distortion of reality and the ensuing damage. Componential analysis shows that the linguoconcept “Lüge” itself comprises three constituent elements: value, semantics and imagery. German phraseological units containing the linguoconcept “Lüge” reveal the presence of legal and political vocabulary and striving for speedy justice. Conceptual analysis shows that the German mentality objectifies lies as an inalienable part of the world and a widespread phenomenon. In the consciousness of German people, lies are negatively connoted but construed as a way of learning the world.

Thus we can conclude that the etymological, conceptual and componential analysis can all be used in identification of mental characteristics in various cultures.
