Gibelev I. V. Non-functionalized Locales in Urban Environment
(Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry)
Abstract ♦ The spatial experience of contemporary urban environment is significantly different from how space has been traditionally imagined. Building on this fact, the article discusses the issue of functionalizing urban spaces. We attempt to localize fragments of urban environment wherein non-functionalized spaces of perception, experience and reflection can be found.
Functionalization of urban spaces implies the emphasis on their pragmatic use at the expense of the variety of their forms and implementations in communication and mobility, land use and spatial organization, economy and culture. It leads to a decrease in the number of public recreational spaces and stereotypization of self-identification models within the city. Its other consequences are spiraling obstacles to self-actualization and more frequent imitation of social and cultural acts. The article advances a hypothesis that the search for non-functionalized locales depends on the type of vision constructed within an ontology of time or space.
The article takes a look at small sculpture in urban playgrounds. Non-functionality of this art form makes it possible to contemplate them disinterestedly. A phenomenological analysis of contemplating small sculptures has allowed us to conclude that metaphysical meanings find their presence in an existential feeling of urban spatial experience.
Keywords: functionality, urban environment, courtyard space, sculptures, philosophy of the city.
