Abstract ♦ The article presents an overview of existing research into the manifestations of archaization and neo-traditionalism in various regions of the Ural Federal District (Kurgan, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen and Chelyabinsk oblasts, Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi (Yugra) autonomous okrugs).
Textual material has been collected and systematized by a team of researchers at the Institute of Fundamental and Applied Studies, Moscow University for the Humanities, in collaboration with their colleagues throughout Russia. The prepared materials are published in the “Russian Models of Archaization and Neo-traditionalism in the Conditions of Modernization” database (www.neoregion.ru).
We consider the Ural District as both typical in the rise of the waves of archaization and the deployment of neo-traditionalism, and possessing a number of unique features. The latter are primarily linked to the history of Ural’s regions, with their social demographics and cultures of indigenous peoples. The Urals feature economic, domestic, religious and ritual forms of neo-traditionalism. It was here that a unique culture of the Cossacks has been forming since the 17th century and has been revived in the post-Soviet period.
