Gladilin N. V. Postmodern Trends in the Late Works of Thomas Mann

Abstract The late novels of T. Mann mark the deviation from the modernist artistic paradigm. If “Doctor Faustus” (1947) deeply criticizes the basics of modernist art then “The Holy Sinner” (1951) and “Confessions of Felix Krull, Confidence Man” (1954) try to overcome the apories of modernism by the ironic game with multiple intertexts in the first case and with identities of the protagonist in the second one; besides that, both works remove the problem of ontological individual fault. Thus, the late novels of T. Mann bring about features of new postmodernist outlook.
