Lukov Val. A. Pushkin’s Dramatic Art: A Thesaurus Paradox of Staginess
The article was written within the framework of the project “A.S. Pushkin’s Dramatic Art: The Problem of Staginess” (supported by the Russian Foundation for the Humanities, grant No. 13-04-00346à).
Abstract ♦ The article aims to describe the thesaurus foundations for assessing staginess of A.S. Pushkin’s dramatic works with regard to opinions of three subjects producing sociocultural orientations, which are significantly important for a modern take on this problem. The three subjects are: 1) Pushkin himself; 2) his contemporaries (friends, foes, reviewers, publishers, etc.); 3) researchers and people of art and culture focused on the cult of Pushkin as a sociocultural phenomenon.
Opinions on the staginess of Pushkin’s dramatic works are frequently chaotic as they reflect a paradoxical combination of several factors of Pushkin’s importance for the Russian consciousness as a symbol of Russian culture. We emphasize the importance of the fact that the corpus of Pushkin’s dramatic works as we have it now was formed not by the author himself, but by publishers, researchers and commentators of later times.
The idea of staginess/non-staginess of Pushkin’s dramatic works has also been influenced by the cult of Pushkin, which was first established in the 19th century. In the Soviet period (1930s and onwards), this cult underwent state-controlled reconstruction in the sphere of ideology and cultural development.
Theoretically and methodologically, this article is based on the thesaurus approach.
