Abstract ♦ The article looks at the details of providing efficient pedagogical practice at a contemporary university.

Having chosen interaction between students and professors in learning mathematics as our main subject, we focus on such conceptual provisions as the characteristic features of the modern learning environment and methodological and content-based ways of enhancing students’ cognitive activity.

By placing them in the context of modern educational trends, we have outlined the main issues of updating approaches to methodologies of setting up the cognitive process and building culture of thought in economics majors.

Due to implementing a new educational paradigm, adopting new federal standards and to the dynamical changes in methodologies of teaching, the problems of mathematical education for economics majors have got more topical. The competence-based approach currently introduced at Russian universities provides that students will be acquiring professional competencies systemically.

In economics as a major, mathematical disciplines, with the exception of statistics, have been put into the context of developing general cultural competences. Utilizing the system approach to the analysis of the academic process, we view mathematical education as enriching the fundamental knowledge, mastering professional skills and practices in the context of mathematical activities which form the foundation of the future work of economists, managers, financiers, marketologists and other professionals.
