Gnevasheva V. A. Virtue and Value as Thesaurus Constants

(Moscow University for the Humanities)

Abstract ♦ The article analyzes the issues of virtue’s definition in philosophical and theological texts from the times of Socrates till the early modern period on the basis of an interpretation of thesaurus constants as stable mental means for the person’s orientation.

The author presents a substantiation of the appearance of the concept of value in the determinant of human being’s personal development and emphasizes the relation between the terms “virtue” and “value” in the definition of virtue as an ontological foundation of value. The opportunities of the determinant of the features of youth’s value reflection by means of the thesaurus approach are substantiated.

A long-term monitoring of the value orientations of contemporary Russian youth have been conducted by the Institute of Fundamental and Applied Studies at Moscow University for the Humanities. This monitoring and a theoretical conceptualization of apostolic fathers’ works on the interpretation of virtue allow to reveal the value reflection of young people and give correlative axiological estimates of the standpoints “value identification”, “reflection of value expectations” and “eternal values (moral virtues)”.

Keywords: virtue, value, axiological reflection, correlative axiological estimations, the thesaurus approach, thesaurus constants, youth.
